The Applied Polymer Technologies Gateway, also known as APT, is a national centre dedicated to polymer research, funded by the Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway Network. APT operates under the umbrella of the PRISM Research Institute at the Technological University of the Shannon, Athlone campus.

What facilities and technologies are available at APT?

APT provides industry with access to cutting edge equipment and expertise in polymer research, development, ad testing. Our state-of-the-art facilities include

  • Design and Prototyping: CAD software, 3D scanning, and advanced additive manufacturing technologies including SLA, FDM and access to a wide range of 3D printing.
  • Polymer Processing: A wide range of processing equipment including injection moulding (ARBURG Allrounder), LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber)
    moulding, extrusion, blow moulding, and thermoforming, as well as our ARBURG Freeformer for industrial additive manufacturing.
  • Materials Testing and Characterisation: ISO 9001 2015 – accredited lab offering physical, thermal, chemical, and migration testing using instruments such as DSC, TGA, FTIR, GC-MS, and more.
  • Climate Chamber Testing: Environmental simulation testing for material performance under varying temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Expert Support: Our team has over 100 years of experience in industry and includes polymer scientists, engineers and industry professionals who provide technical support, R&D collaboration, and guidance through regulatory and materials challenges.
