Wool in School is an education company committed to increasing the awareness of wool, its production and sustainable qualities in school, home and community environments. They promote cross generational learning by exploring wool in its natural form, encouraging further investigation into its uses and benefits as a sustainable resource with a focus on wool innovation and investigation.
They introduce children, teachers and families to the amazing qualities of wool and fibres. Showcasing the sustainability of sheep and how they deserve a place in our future in the midst of our ongoing battle with climate change and environment renewal believing now is the time to explore and elaborate on the benefits of wool. Wool in School aims to lead the discussion as to why wool has its place in the conversation of climate change.
Virtual Reality (VR) in education and agriculture serves as a bridge between the abstract and the tangible, transforming complex concepts into immersive experiences that enhance understanding. This project is an educational experience which allows you to visualise and interact with the farming and agriculture environment.
Immersive educational 360 video experience
IMaR Technology Gateway commenced this innovation project by creating an immersive educational 360 video experience with educational content for each segment and outlining the detailed key educational points at various milestones of the process. With the defined educational objectives in mind, 360 video footage of the sheep shearing process, which entails preparation, shearing, rolling and combing, was further enhanced with 2D overlays.
This delivered the objectives of the technical deliverables of the project by providing users with interactive hotspots, highlighting educational content about wool production and its sustainable qualities.

immersive 360 experience
“We are thrilled to announce the launch of Feirm VR (Irish for Farm VR) our first virtual reality (VR) experience that offers an immersive experience learning about shearing and wool presentation in Ireland. This VR experience is designed to support Irish wool farmers and enrich educational curriculums, providing a vivid understanding of farm life and the importance of sustainable fibre production. Available openly on our website, it ensures broad accessibility, allowing users of all ages to explore and appreciate the intricate initial process of wool production from the comfort of their own homes or classrooms while providing a realistic and detailed view of how sheep are shorn, highlighting the skill and care involved. We would like to thank the IMaR Technology Gateway team at MTU Kerry and George Graham for their expertise in supporting the delivery of this important project”.

IMaR completed this project in an immersive 360 experience for Wool in School. This experience will now be assessed over time to measure the effectiveness and child engagement in the delivery of the educational aspect to ensure positive outcomes for children, families and communities. The next step in this journey will be to expand on the immersive 360 experience to cover the processing of wool and its applications/usage in everyday life.
