PEM Gateway partners with Harlequin Manufacturing to pioneer tailored wastewater treatment innovation.

As a family-owned business headquartered in Northern Ireland, Harlequin Manufacturing has been at the forefront of innovation for over four decades. From their humble beginnings with just three employees in 1981, they have grown to a team of 105 dedicated individuals, serving clients across Europe. 

Harlequin’s commitment to innovation and diversification has led them to develop a diverse range of polyethylene storage tanks and systems, catering to the residential, commercial, and agribusiness sectors. 

Diversification of product range 

In collaboration with PEM Technology Gateway at ATU Sligo, Harlequinn embarked on an InterTradeIreland, Co-Innovate project to expand their wastewater product range. Our goal? To develop bespoke post-septic wastewater solutions for commercial clients and exceed environmental standards without the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. 

Development of pilot plant in-house 

Through this collaboration, they designed and built a pilot plant in-house, allowing them to fine-tune the prototype system and pave the way for full-scale production. Over a rigorous 65-day testing period, we’ve explored various design options for our post-septic unit, laying the groundwork for a commercial prototype meeting the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

“The growth in this area has been slowly increasing year on year but is now the focus of the company’s plans for development. The post-septic filter product will expand that offering for our customers, but more importantly, the knowledge base and skills developed in-house throughout this project will allow us to expand this product range further.”
