Walton Institute at South East Technological University (SETU) is marking 30 years of ICT research and industry collaboration, highlighting its contribution to applied digital innovation in Ireland and across Europe.

Established in 1996 as the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), the organisation has grown into one of Ireland’s largest applied ICT research institutes. Since its foundation, Walton Institute has delivered more than €850 million in research activity and collaborated with over 800 industry and academic partners internationally.

The Institute’s work has focused on developing practical technology solutions in areas including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, telecommunications, smart networks and digital transformation. Research programmes have supported companies operating in manufacturing, healthcare, transport, energy, agriculture and public services.

A major focus throughout the Institute’s development has been industry engagement and technology adoption, predominantly through its Technology Gateway: ICS. Walton Institute has worked with Irish SMEs, start-ups and multinational organisations to help companies test, validate and implement emerging technologies through collaborative research projects.

IoT and connected systems have been a core part of this activity. Research teams at Walton Institute have developed IoT platforms and data-driven solutions for applications such as smart manufacturing, connected health, precision agriculture and intelligent infrastructure management. These technologies support organisations in improving operational efficiency, monitoring assets in real time and using data analytics to support decision-making.

The Institute has also contributed to large-scale European research programmes and cross-border innovation initiatives. Through participation in EU-funded projects, Walton Institute has supported the development of next-generation digital infrastructure and advanced communication technologies.

One example is IrelandQCI, the national quantum communications infrastructure initiative aligned with the European EuroQCI programme. Walton Institute is a partner in the project, which is focused on strengthening the security and resilience of future communications networks using quantum technologies.

Research activity at the Institute has also included work on 5G and future networks, cybersecurity systems, edge computing, AI-driven automation and digital twins. Many of these technologies are increasingly relevant to industrial digitalisation and the continued growth of connected systems across sectors.

In addition to research delivery, Walton Institute has played a role in developing ICT talent and innovation capability in Ireland’s South East region. The organisation has supported postgraduate research, specialist training and industry-focused innovation programmes aimed at strengthening regional and national competitiveness.

The 30-year milestone comes as Ireland prepares for its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, where digital transformation, resilience, sustainability and industrial competitiveness are expected to remain key priorities.

Over the past three decades, Walton Institute has developed long-term partnerships with Enterprise Ireland, Research Ireland, the European Commission and industry stakeholders to support applied research and technology commercialisation. These collaborations have enabled companies to access research expertise, test emerging technologies and accelerate innovation.

As industries continue to adopt connected technologies, AI and automation, the demand for applied ICT research is expected to increase. Walton Institute’s work in IoT, secure communications and digital systems positions the organisation to continue supporting technology adoption and innovation across Irish and European industry.
