The MET Technology Gateway, based in ATU Galway City offers technology solutions targeted at medical device, life-sciences and engineering companies. Funded by Enterprise Ireland, MET supports RD&I activities for industries throughout the west of Ireland and nationally.
What is MET Technology Gateway?
The Medical and Engineering Technologies (MET) Centre is an interdisciplinary technology centre providing world class solutions for the Medtech and general manufacturing sectors. The Centre develops novel technologies relevant to both clinical research and MedTech companies operating in the design application phase. By actively engaging with clinical and industry partners, the Centre produces both scientific knowledge and technology outputs across a range of streams.
What expertise is available at MET?
MET’s core expertise is in anatomical modelling and physiological replication. They also have expertise in data analytics and the visualisation of clinical data and provide services in design verification technologies, such as materials and product testing, technical reviews, brainstorming, 3D solid works design, rapid prototyping in 3D printing and 4 axis machining. The Gateway also offers expertise in independent critique and access to resource pool that may not be available internally to companies. MET also has leading expertise in nutritional science and sports performance and can assist companies in product design and innovation.
What facilities and technologies are available?
MET Gateway offers a suite of technologies that are not readily available elsewhere. Based at ATU’s Galway campus, MET offers a range of applied technologies relevant to companies in the product engineering and design application phase.
These technologies include:
Medical Imaging Technologies: The gateway’s suite of medical imaging equipment includes a purpose built fluoroscope facility, ultrasound equipment and SEM microscope.
Anatomical Modelling and Physiological Replication: translation of medical data into engineering data and subsequently into clinically endorsed best-in-class anatomical models and simulation systems.
Data Analytics & Visualisation: expertise, software and hardware to manipulate, interrogate and visualise industry data in any volume.
Design Engineering & Verification: 3D solid works design, rapid prototyping in 3D printing and 4 axis machining, technical reviews, product testing and more.
Medicinal Nutrition Technologies: with expertise in Nutrition and Sports Science, MET can assist the food industry in all aspects of novel food development including food analysis and testing, human intervention trials, product innovation, development and optimisation.
What services are available at MET?
The Gateway personnel available to the Gateway offer a unique conduit between medical product engineering and an in-depth knowledge of internal anatomy. Specifically, MET researchers have mastered the ability to translate medical data into engineering data and finally in to clinically endorsed anatomical models. These models compare and often surpass the best-in-class models available, and can be built to replicate standard or patient specific profiles. The centre also continues to improve its ability to replicate friction forces, biological artefacts and the dynamics of living organs.
What type of companies do MET collaborate with?
MET works closely with industrial collaborators in all sectors and collaborates with medical device and engineering companies ranging in size from start-ups and SME’s to multinationals.
